Lake Red Rock was formed in 1969 after the construction of Red Rock Dam by the US Army Corps of Engineers. The building of the dam covered the towns of Red Rock, Cordova, Dunreath, Rousseau, Fifield, and Coalport. Marion County has produced a brochure documenting the history of these lost towns.
The map on the left is from an Iowa geological survey conducted in 1912, which show the location of the now-submerged towns. An overlay of the 1931 map with today's USGS aerial photo provides insight into what used to be and the land that still lays under Lake Red Rock.
